Essay Three
For essay three I'm going to do something different and do it on Desperate Housewives. The episode I'm going to focus on are earlier ones when all the wives were stay at home moms or in Gabby's case she was a stay at home gold digger. The reason im picking this show is because it represents the many different families that there are today. I want to find out why producers decided to do a show about different kind of families that all live on the same street. Weather they were suppose to represent the many different type of families there are out there or just because each family can have its own drama played out for America to see. I'm going to examine how each wife's life differs and what role the husband plays if they have a husband. I want to talk about how each family goes for or against an argument from a reading (not sure which ones yet so any ideas let me know) I also want to look at the episode where Brie's son comes out how he is gay and Brie tries to change him back to being "normal" and relate that to Yeps reading and queer as folk reading too. I want to re-write an episode where the husbands stay at home while the wives work. Desperate housewives has a little bit of all different kinds of families, single mother, widow then remarry, and the traditional family with a husband and wife. I think i will have more to write about doing Desperate Housewives because it has a little bit of everything in there. Most of my sources are going to be Internet sources to find out the meaning behind the show and also the readings we have done. I want analyze the episode where Brie's son come out that he is gay and analyze how the TV show portrays his sexuality and how it related to Queer as Folk. I might want to analyze how times have changed, Susan is a single mother and all the wives on the street accept her and how if it was set in a different time period how things would be different.

Hi Kat,
ReplyDeleteYou've got a lot of ideas for this research paper! One thing that I would definitely suggest is that you narrow your focus a little so that you have something more manageable for your paper.
One idea would be to perhaps rename the show "Desperate Husbands," where the husbands stay home while the wives work. You might imagine each couple, too, as flipped: Gaby is the workhouse while Carlos is the stay-at-home golddigger and former model. Tom takes care of the four kids while Lynette goes to work. Susan is the one who left her husband for a younger man! (Her first husband left her for a younger woman, originally.)
Another idea might be to focus on the show's representation of homosexuality, and flip that. How, for example, might Bree's reaction to Andrew's coming out be flipped? What if Lee and Bob were fast friends with the husbands, not the women? There are also a lot of options you could explore if you go this route.
By narrowing your focus a little more and choosing one or the other, you will be able to explore how the show represents stereotypes of gender and sexuality, and it will give you a lot more room to analyze the characters and what they represent. Hope that this helps!

Kat,
ReplyDeleteI think thats a great idea! When I first read your post I wasnt sure how you were going to re-write the episode but I think that what you said would not only be really funny, but also it will allow you to really expose a lot of theories we discussed in class. I think what our professor said as well is a great idea and may allow you to focus a little more on a certain topic. Overall it looks great, good luck.
