For my paper I’m going to analyze the candies ads because I have seen them on TV and have always wondered why they picked these ad’s to put there name out there. I remember watching the news when the advertisement came out, when Jenny McCarthy was on there sitting on the toilet, it was a big controversy. She was half naked with her panties down reading a magazine. I always wondered why Candies pick these controversial ad with half dress women to sell there product when what’s in there ads really has nothing to do with it. I’m curious to find out why Candies pick these kinds of advertisements and why they pick these certain celebrities to be feature in them like Jenny McCarthy.
Thesis:
Even though Candies ad’s can be controversial, and make the audience wonder why they pick these ads, they represent everything that Heteronormativity stands for.
This ad is what Heteronormativity defines, they have a female and male on them trying to attract in there audience. The women in the ad’s are barley wearing anything which what catches the males eye while the males too are barley wearing anything they are there to catch the females eye. These ad’s are doing there job they are getting attention of the media which is getting the attention of potential buyers. What I want to know is why they pick these certain types of ad’s, was it to just get publicity or was there a different reason? I want my audience to know that there is a reason why ad's are a certain way, that companys thoughfully create ad to get the audience's attenetion. Also that companys conform to this idea of Heteronormativity in there ad's.

Kat...I am also wondering why Candies picks the women they do to represent their products? I think their main goal is to shock people and surprise them so the audience doesn't know what their next ad would look like. This is a good topic to pick and I think it would be interesting to show some of your points into why certain things are choosen for certain ads and their whole purpose. What is even more interesting is that the majority of ads are for shoes so I don't understand the half-naked women they have on there sometime. Shouldn't their focus be the shoes and foot? Instead they incorporate a womans full body....
ReplyDeleteHi Kat,
ReplyDeleteThese are great ads for you to analyze. I think there is a series of three (that I have seen), so that will definitely help you in terms of focus.
You make a good point that the ads seem to focus on things that are not related to the product. In this case, Candies is selling shoes, but the shoes are not the focal point of the ads!
As you start working on your analysis of the ads, one thing to work on is refining your thesis a little further. When you say "everything that heteronormativity stands for," what are you thinking about? It might be a good idea to focus on just one or two aspects to help give your paper a little more structure. You might also think about using Bordo's "Beauty and the Reproduction of Feminity," as well as Mulvey and the Kilbourne video. All these texts make excellent points about women being represented for the male gaze. Could it be that these ads are not focused on the shoes because the advertisers are going for that male audience as well? Something to think about. I'm interested to see how your analysis takes shape. ~Megan
I think this is a great idea to use for your second paper. I have always thought the Candies ads were a bit odd. I never even really know what the ads are even about. I usually even forget that it is for shoes. I remember when I was younger I never even knew what Candies were, because the advertisements were so distracting. I never understood why ad’s always use pictures in the ad’s that do not even relate to what they are trying to sell. I think that companies would sell more of their products if they used the actual product in ad’s.
